World Powerlifting Lanka (WPSL), under the leadership of renowned World Champion Dr. Ruwan Paul, proudly launched its groundbreaking national initiative, Journey in Search of Giants, with its first-ever powerlifting workshop on April 27, 2025, at the National Sports Complex Ground, Polonnaruwa.
This free workshop marks the beginning of an ambitious campaign to identify and nurture hidden athletic talent across all corners of Sri Lanka. With open eligibility for all Sri Lankans aged 14 to 90, the initiative aims to promote health, discipline, and sporting excellence among youth and adults alike. Supported by the Ministry of Education, the program emphasizes the importance of national fitness, ethics in sports through anti-doping education, and world-class coaching.
WPSL’s larger mission is to position Sri Lanka as a leading powerlifting hub in the Asia-Pacific region. By reaching out to underrepresented and rural communities, the organization seeks to uplift aspiring athletes and prepare them for international competition. The program also promises economic and tourism benefits, with the 2025 World Powerlifting Championship scheduled to be held in Colombo this November, drawing over 2,000 global participants.
The success of this inaugural event in Polonnaruwa sets the stage for future workshops and competitions, including the Sri Lanka Championships in May and July, the Asia Championships in Kathmandu, and the Oceania Championships in Sydney. WPSL invites continued collaboration from public institutions, schools, and communities nationwide to realize this transformative vision for Sri Lankan sport.
Dr. Ruwan Paul’s vision for this initiative is deeply rooted in national pride and youth empowerment. His aim is not only to find the strongest individuals but to instill discipline, resilience, and confidence in every participant. Through this journey, he hopes to elevate Sri Lanka’s sporting profile and build a new generation of champions.
